Ever wonder how your competitors get on the first page of search engines like Google and Bing? As a web design and SEO company we get asked this so frequently we will be answering this in a series discussing the facts and myths surrounding this complex topic. First lets answer the question of what search engines like Google and Bing really do for us.
As an example let’s say you are in Orlando on vacation and after a long day at Disney. Unfamiliar with the area you pull out your handy smartphone, go on Google or Bing and type in (as over 80% of us would) or ask verbally “Best restaurants near Disney World”.
Without getting into technical details just yet we have a question for you. If Google gave you a SERP (Search Engine Results Page) with nothing more than one restaurant related result and the rest lets say hotels would you be frustrated? Lets say this continued where you had to comb thru result after result to find what you were looking for, chances are you would leave Google and give Bing a shot to see what they do differently.
Relevance is a search engine’s holy grail. People want results that are closely connected to their queries. – Marc Ostrofsky
Bottom line is we are Google and Bing’s customer’s. Their complex algorithms are designed to serve you the most relevant results in respect to your search. If they neglected to do this they lose us (their customers) to each other or another search engine that can give us the results we are looking for. These are globally two of the largest companies on the planet and they have done a fantastic job of delivering us the content we demand.
Stay tuned for the next part in our series where we evaluate what search engine algorithms are, and how they effect the results we are served.
